SPACE and NVR Therapy

Overcoming a child’s or young person’s anxiety using SPACE and violent, aggressive, harmful or self-destructive behaviour using Non-Violent Resistance (NVR).

SPACE Treatment

SPACE stands for Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions and is a 10-12 week parent-based treatment program for children and adolescents with anxiety, OCD, and related problems.

SPACE was developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center and has been tested and found to be efficacious in randomised controlled clinical trials.

SPACE aims to treat children and adolescents with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Although children do not attend SPACE sessions – they are the clients! When SPACE treatment is successful children feel less anxious and function better following treatment.

Some of the main anxiety problems treated with SPACE include:

  • Separation anxiety
  • Social anxiety
  • Generalised anxiety
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

As a parent, if you participate in the SPACE program, I will coach you in learning skills and tools to help your child overcome anxiety, OCD or related problems. The treatment focuses on changes that you, as a parent, can make to your own behaviour rather than expecting your child to change.

NVR Therapy

NVR is an established and well researched approach, which has been specifically developed for responding effectively to aggressive, violent, self-destructive and controlling behaviour in children, adolescents and young adults. Some of these behaviours may include hitting, kicking, punching and threatening behaviour to the parent, or violence to the young person themselves (self-harm, suicidality).

NVR doesn’t look to the child to make changes; the focus is on parents learning strategies to rebuild trust and connection and foster positive and loving relationships.

As a parent I will coach you to de-escalate violent reactions, increase your parental presence through nonviolent action and use reconciliation gestures to help you and your child relate to one another beyond the control and aggression.

A minimum of 12 weekly sessions is required with additional telephone support between sessions as needed.

    60 minute session + mid-week support

I am happy to accept payment either in cash or by bank transfer, either weekly or as a block booking (in advance).
